The SONAMI Foundation and Las Cenizas Mining Group recently presented a children’s story to encourage reading among children and to facilitate their understanding of the mining industry.
More than 550 students from Cabildo experienced a memorable morning at the Municipal Theater, engaging in a distinctive and informative activity.
A partnership between the SONAMI Foundation and Las Cenizas Mining Group resulted in the presentation of “La Piedra de la Suerte: Las aventuras de Catalina en la Colina Encantada” (The Lucky Stone: Catalina’s Adventures on the Enchanted Hill) on Friday, May 23. This story illustrates the significance of minerals in our lives.
Through reading and playing, the children gained a deeper understanding of the mining industry, its impact on the country, and the role of minerals in everyday life.
The book initiative was developed by the SONAMI Foundation as part of the Cultural Donations Law, and its publication was made possible with the support of the Las Cenizas Mining Group, Anglo American, BHP, and the Collahuasi Foundation.
Mining industry leaders emphasize the importance of education in the field.
The event, presided over by Jorge Riesco, president of SONAMI, was attended by Francisco Araya, vice president of the association; Juana María Vives, general secretary; Cristián Argandoña, general manager of Las Cenizas Mining Group; the mayor of Cabildo, Patricio Aliaga Díaz; local authorities; executives from Las Cenizas Mining Group; representatives from the mining sector; and members of the educational community.
“It was an activity full of energy and excitement. By presenting a compelling narrative, we can effectively highlight the significant contributions of our industry to the nation’s progress,” stated Jorge Riesco.
Our general manager, Cristián Argandoña, emphasized the following: “It is very motivating to share this type of experience with children who will be part of Chile’s future. This initiative serves as a catalyst for stimulating curiosity and underscoring the pivotal role that mining plays in fostering opportunities and dreams for communities.”
Moments
One of the most memorable moments of the event was the narration of the story by Nico Toro, an actor and storyteller. Mr. Toro captivated the audience with his interpretation of Catalina and her adventure on the enchanted hill.
At the conclusion of the activity, the students received a copy of the book, a coloring book, and colored pencils, encouraging them to continue exploring this literary adventure through creative expression.
