The professional practice conducted in the Kukulkan sector, in the municipality of Petorca, corresponds to the “Economic Geology” course and is part of the agreement signed between the University of Chile, Sernageomin, and Las Cenizas Mining Group.
Between April 28 and May 5, twelve fifth-year geology students from the University of Chile are conducting a geological survey in the Kukulkan sector, located on the property of Las Cenizas Mining Group in the municipality of Petorca, at an altitude of approximately 1,610 meters above sea level.
This academic activity, which is the result of an agreement between the university, SERNAGEOMIN, and Las Cenizas Mining Group, aims to contribute to the geological and metallogenic knowledge of Region V through studies in areas that have been little explored.
During their stay, students will therefore conduct exploration work in an area that has not yet been explored, contributing to the geological knowledge of the specific area.
The activity is conducted with the support of the professor and assistant professors. All participants have access to camping facilities and meals provided especially for this event. Before entering the field, the delegation received a safety induction briefing from Cabildo’s Risk Prevention Department.
Field support
The Greenfield Geology team has been in constant coordination with the students, visiting the area to supervise the work, providing technical and logistical support, and supplying materials, including the installation of portable toilets.
On Wednesday, April 30, professionals from Las Cenizas Mining Group Communities and Communications departments accompanied one of these visits, with the aim of learning more about the development of the agreement and gathering the students’ impressions in the field.
